Activision has picked up King Digital Entertainment, the company responsible for mobile sensation Candy Crush, in a deal with a reported £3.8bn/$5.9bn/€5.3bn. It may be of interest to note that as the King IP launched in March last year it valued the company at $7bn, however the stock price dropped markedly soon thereafter.
The move gives the publisher an increased presence in the mobile and social gaming sector, reinforcing a position which already includes a strong foothold in terms of both console and PC gaming.
Activision Blizzard's new acquisition means that they now have sweet-toothed match3 game Candy Crush to compliment their existing portfolio of games, including the Call of Duty series and World of Warcraft.
Given the strength of King's presence in the mobile space, and with the range of popular IPs now potentially available to them, it'll be interesting to see what the studio does next.
