It's similar to what we've seen in Blackout, although there are a few key differences to consider before dropping in.

Until last year the battle royale genre wasn't something we'd associate with the Call of Duty franchise, but with the release of Black Ops 4 and the Blackout mode in 2018, that all changed, and now we can expect to see the same thing in Android and iOS game Call of Duty: Mobile.

Activision has published a lengthy post showcasing this mode, unique to Mobile and featuring up to 100 players on one map. Solo, duos, and four-person squad playlists are being tested right now, and there are six classes, the option to revive, third- and first-person perspectives, and similar rules to Blackout.

There's new territory in the map, but we're also promised settings from other games in the franchise like Modern Warfare and Black Ops.

Before each match you need to pick your loadout wisely, including classes, camos, and skins, much like we've seen with Call of Duty in the past. Choosing your class is important too, as each has an ability and class skill (not dissimilar to multiplayer in Black Ops 4), and then you'll parachute in, search for loot, and of course fight.

Some extra controls have been added to Battle Royale as well, like accessing the backpack for equipment and the option to activate your class skill. You'll also be taught crouching, going prone, jumping, and marking a position on the map.

As for the classes, we get an insight into these as well:

  • Defender: Features a Transform Shield that they can place, and has a higher resistance to all damage except for bullets.

  • Mechanic: Can call an EMP drone in to create interference with hostiles, as well as the Engineer ability giving augmented sight to traps, equipment, vehicles, and more.

  • Scout: Has a Sensor Dart to show hostile locations on a small area of the radar, but also has the Tracker ability to show fresh footprints.

  • Clown: Toy Bomb allows you to summon zombies that attack enemies near them, with the Clown also having Anti-Zombie to reduce aggression distance for the undead.

  • Medic: Can place a Medical Station that heals yourself and teammates, with Master Healer letting the Medic heal quicker and reducing the time to revive allies.

  • Ninja: This has a Grapple Gun letting you get up to buildings or across the map, and movement is quiet thanks to the Dead Silence ability.

With regards to reviving, if a friend is eliminated they'll leave their dog tag behind, which can be used to bring them back to life with the revive button, dropping them back into the battlefield once more.

Those with third-person will also not be matched with those in first-person due to the slight advantage they have, and "there aren't current plans to have TPP and FPP together in the same game", according to Activision's post.

As you progress through the match you can also expect supply crates to land and beacons to mark the location of Class Upgrade items, augmenting your skills. Some of these will only become available once instructions on the cache are completed, like clearing an area of zombies.

Vehicles include an ATV, light helicopter, SUB, and tactical raft, all of which will help you navigate missile silos, hangars, war-torn settlements, diners, farms, and more on offer with the map.

Pre-registration is now open in certain regions for Call of Duty: Mobile, with signups available on the website.
