Aer started development four years ago, when Robin Hjelte and his colleagues were university students. He said they spent around a year and a half simply working on the core gameplay mechanics, making sure they were refined before moving on to other aspects such as world building and lore. We're now just two months away from launch, and we spoke to Hjelte at Gamescom this week to hear his thoughts about what people can expect.

"When we set out to start making the game, we wanted to make something that had kind of the vibe of both The Legend of Zelda games, and Journey, but something like in-between and for us it was exploration; that was the thing we wanted to focus on. Then it just became something with the free flight mechanics, you just fly around, it did its own thing but somewhere between those two games. Certainly thatgamecompany-esque."

It looks gorgeous and we can't wait to get our hands on it, and if you're similarly interested be sure to check out the full interview below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

REVIEW. Written by Terje Mardon Kello

"The visuals are minimalist, beautiful, and timeless, and the soundscape is simple but altogether powerful in its own right."

It's still a long way off in the distance, but AER is one game that we can't wait to explore properly.
