While it was made clear already that users' strong negative response to Star Wars Battlefront II's planned loot boxes system had an impact on the game's initial sales, analysts have now looked at how the controversy will translate into loss of profit, as well as how EA will react after the backlash, as they're apparently planning on reactivating microtransactions in 2018.

As reported by CNBC, Merril Lynch already lowered estimated stock rates for EA given this specific game's performance. Justin Post from the ferm expects the controversy to relax somewhat after Christmas, but for now has lowered the company's price target based on the also lowered sales estimates.

Indeed, in order for EA to recapture expected profit levels, the same analyst foresees a much better first half of FY19 (2018 April-September) based on both "FIFA World Cup content launch" for FIFA 18 and "Battlefront MTX relaunch", meaning EA would have found a more balanced and 'sell-able' model for supply crates by then. CNBC backs this claim by also pointing at another "Wall Street firm".

Overall, Justin Post expects Star Wars Battlefront II to close the current FY at around 11.5 million sold, 2.5 million short of EA's official goal.

Do you think the game will have a big impact like these firms predict?

REVIEW. Written by Mike Holmes

"It never gets boring watching Yoda rip through enemy lines with his lightning-quick lightsaber (as long as he's on your side, of course)."
