The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Aonuma silent on whether Zelda is playable in Breath of the Wild 2

It also sounds like Red Redemption 2 is inspiring the team in the way Skyrim inspired the first game.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild II took everyone at E3 by surprise. The announcement of the sequel of one of the most influential games of this generation was totally unexpected, and so was the fact that we got to watch a full cinematic trailer at the end of Nintendo's E3 Direct. People everywhere are picking over the enigmatic scene, which sees a mysterious evil brought back to life.

Sights are also firmly on Zelda. She looks different and we are not talking about her new haircut. She looks stronger, full of confidence, proactive. She looks like a protagonist. Could it be? Producer Eiji Aonuma talked about that with Kotaku's Jason Schreier and this is what was said on the matter:

Aonuma: "A lot of people have been asking that, and so I want to ask you, why do people think that?"
Schreier: "Well it seems like it'd make sense because at the end of Breath of the Wild she was freed, so now she can be a protagonist. Also, I think people have wanted it for a long time."
Aonuma: "I see. [laughs] But I can't tell you."

It might have been a no-comment, but it's one that raises questions about whether or not she is indeed the main character, or whether she's simply one of several prominent NPCs in the Breath of the Wild's just-announced sequel. It certainly wouldn't be her first time getting involved, as she is one of the many playable characters in Hyrule Warriors and also in Cadence of Hyrule, which is launching later today.

There is another thing that was this week revealed by Eiji Aonuma that shouldn't go under the radar. Speaking with IGN, he mentioned that some of his team were playing and being inspired by a recent release:

"I did hear that a lot of people were playing was Red Dead Redemption 2," he told the site. Why is that important? Because he also mentioned that the last game was influenced by Skyrim, which the game the director Hidemaro Fujibayashi was playing at the time. What do you think that Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 could take from RDR2?
