Battletoads' return will still be a "genre mashup"

It's more than just a beat 'em up, as lead producer Paul Collins told us at Gamescom, featuring plenty of other gameplay elements.

As you know from our gameplay that we've already shared, we got to play the return of Battletoads during our time at Gamescom, but we also spoke with lead designer Paul Collins in Cologne as well, and we asked him about how this version is being true to the originals.

"Battletoads at its heart is a combat, side-scrolling beat 'em up, but then what's always made it stand out is it's a genre mashup," he explained. "You could be doing combat one time, and then be doing platforming, racing, and some other stuff we haven't announced yet, and it's just so interesting because it's like a palate cleanser [...] We really want to retain that, but also make it a sequel that feels right in its own merits."

This also includes a rather unique art style provided by Dlala Studios, as explained by Collins in the full interview below, who also talked about the humour, the multiplayer, levels, and more.

Are you excited to see the Battletoads again?

REVIEW. Written by Ben Lyons

"Battletoads might just end up being one of the best titles to come out of an Xbox Game Studio this year."
