Nintendo has finally confirmed Breath of the Wild's place within the timeline for The Legend of Zelda series. The newly-revised timeline, which can be found (in Japanese) via the Zelda section of the official Nintendo site, reveals what many fans have long suspected, that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sits at the end of the Zelda timeline.

What we didn't know before but do now is the fact that Breath of the Wild doesn't link to previous adventures in the same way as earlier entries in the series, and as such, it stands unconnected to past games.

When asked to clarify which timeline BotW sits at the end of, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi was unsurprisingly cryptic when he told Famitsu: "That's... up to the player's imagination, isn't it?"

Producer Eiji Aonuma then added: "Hyrule's history changes with time. When we think of the next game and what we want to do with it, we might think, 'Oh, this'll fit well', and place it neatly into the timeline, but sometimes we think, 'Oh crap' and have to change the placement. Actually, the decided history has been tweaked many times."

To that point, the Fallen Hero timeline has also been tweaked just a little, and now Link's Awakening is confirmed as taking place before the Oracle games. And with that bombshell past theories are undone and new ones will no doubt take their place.
