Bungie reveals plan to break with Activision and self-publish

Bungie has just announced its intention to part company with Activision and eventually retain the rights to the Destiny IP as an independent self-publishing studio.

In a statement published on Bungie.net earlier today, the studio confirmed that "the planned transition process is already underway in its early stages" and that "looking ahead, we're excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie."

The statement, which highlights many of the positive aspects of the partnership between publisher and studio, reflects on some of the successes they've enjoyed since they teamed up in 2010 in what was announced at the time as a ten-year deal.

"We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny. Looking ahead, we're excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects."

"The planned transition process is already underway in its early stages, with Bungie and Activision both committed to making sure the handoff is as seamless as possible."

In the same statement, the studio confirms that they'll continue with their existing plans with regards to supporting Destiny 2.

"We'll continue to deliver on the existing Destiny roadmap, and we're looking forward to releasing more seasonal experiences in the coming months, as well as surprising our community with some exciting announcements about what lies beyond."

There had been speculation about the relationship between the companies and this move certainly won't dampen talk. How long it takes them to untangle their partnership remains to be seen, but Bungie clearly seems keen to push forward and have its Destiny in its own hands once again.
