For the ninth consecutive year, Metacritic has slogged through 12 months of data to determine the best and worst game publishers of the year, based solely on their 2018 releases. In the data used, sales and user reviews do not hold any leverage over the ranking; only critic reviews were used to evaluate the position of each respective publisher.

The publishers in the lists were split into two categories, the first being the most active companies who each published 12 or more titles. The second category was reserved for 'mid-size' publishers, who released anywhere between 5-11 titles. The formula used was based on four factors that included the average Metascore for all games released in 2018, the number of products with good reviews (Metascore of at least 75), the number of products with bad reviews (Metascore of 49 or below), and finally the number of 'great' titles (Metascore of 90 or higher).

After all this the formula calculated that Capcom took home the crown this year, which is a substantial improvement from fifth place last year. They achieved a Metascore of 79.3 that was largely bolstered by the stellar launch of Monster Hunter: World back in January, a game which is actually Capcom's best-selling ever. The company managed to receive positive reviews for five of its six products over the year, giving it a success rate of 83.3%.

As for the other publishers on the ranking, there were little notable changes in position except for last year's champion Bethesda, who dropped down into the mid-size publisher list and ended up just ahead of Microsoft in 6th. The full lists can be found on Metacritic as well as more information regarding how the data was calculated.
