The US market is as fresh today as it was a decade ago. Actually, it's achieving figures we haven't seen in a long time and almost every company is making money. May 2018 was a great month, with 15% year-on-year growth and total revenue of $685 million thanks to the hardware and accessories divisions, up 26% and 30% respectively. Software, on the other hand, was 4% down against May 2017.
Microsoft should be happy because State of Decay 2 was the best-selling title over God of War, almost doubling what the original one managed. Yes, Kratos was ahead in April, but Undead Labs' zombie game doesn't count Xbox Game Pass downloads since the games are listed by revenue, not by units.
Sony should still be happy because Detroit: Become Human sales represent a record high for developer Quantic Dream and, as a publisher, it was overall number one.
And Nintendo might be smiling as well, because Switch software sales were almost double that of the year before and the highest for any Nintendo platform in May since the Nintendo Wii in May 2011, so says the NPD Group via ResetEra
In terms of hardware, the most popular console was the PS4 (and PS4 Pro), but all three consoles broke their previous records for May. The Nintendo Switch 32GB was the month's best-selling hardware SKU. Lastly, Xbox One gamers are the ones who spent the most on accessories.
