Just the other day we reported on the delay for the Kickstarter campaign that was going to fund the manufacturing of the Coleco Chameleon, a new retro console that was to use the brand owned by the ColecoVision and ADAM computers creators. But then both the prototypes and new manufacturer RetroVGS' statements started to look and sound fishy, which resulted in the crowdfunding delay and the brand owners asked for further proof of the legitimacy of the project.

Apparently, they had been using PCI capture card as inner 'hardware', or even "a SNES Jr. duct-taped into an Atari Jaguar shell" (at the New York Toy Fair).

Now, ColecoVision has updated its Facebook page announcing the definitive pulling of the brand:

"Retro VGS has decided that the work that they have created is not sufficient to demonstrate at this time. Consequently, we can no longer proceed with the project and the Chameleon project will be terminated. This separation is amicable. We wish them luck in the future. - We thank the gaming community for their continued support, input, vigilance and trust."

However, in a perhaps less amicable statement sent to Polygon, Coleco's owner Mark Thomann adds that "it just wasn't what we had thought it would be. We thought it would be an originally developed console, and the indications were that it just wasn't." This was after properly examining the real 'prototype' as per their request.

However, Thomann is still open on lending the brand for a proper retro console, as long as it properly built and presented. As for RetroVGS, looks like members are quitting and both Facebook and Chameleon official sites have been closed down.
