Microsoft Studios' Senior Art Director Dave Johnson was present at a London event when we recently got our hands on the upcoming Crackdown 3, and once we'd tried the game out we sat down with him in the interview below to talk about the team's goals for this project and how they feel now it's almost here.

"When we set out to make Crackdown 3 we had some pretty ambitious goals," Johnson explained. "I think that the team themselves knew that we wanted to take that original formula that made Crackdown so great and expand upon it. So we wanted to make sure that we brought back things that players love, like the orbs, the verticality, the skill-based levelling system - all those things that made it really special - but then we wanted to expand on just about everything."

"We wanted to build a much more fleshed-out story and narrative, we wanted to increase the size of the world, and we just wanted to in general give more for those fans of the franchise."

With a bigger world comes more options, and as for the choice available to you, Johnson also clarified that this is far from a linear experience when he said:

"We want [players] to find new and exciting ways to play this game. That's kind of the beauty of a game like Crackdown 3 and a campaign like this - you can play it any way you want, and my experience will differ greatly from anyone else's experience, and that's a really good thing."

Are you a fan of the original games?

"Those looking for a simple retread of 2007's Crackdown may come away satisfied but we found little here that grabbed our interest."
