Crates in PUBG are getting changed this month

The first steps will be taken to make sure that items are more satisfactory for players, including the removal of keys.

Crates are a good way to get items in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds as things stand, but a new post from Sujin Kim of the PUBG Item Production Dev Team reveals that the system is about to change, with random crates purchased with BP no longer requiring a key to open.

On top of that, locked crates from random purchases will no longer be available from December 18, and crates already in your inventory or bought on the marketplace can still be opened with the key, still available from the store. Also, the new Crate will retain the trade value of the highest-tiered item, and the probability for each tier has been tweaked to raise the likelihood of getting an attractive weapon.

The changes have been made as the team has found players often don't get enjoyment out of opening crates.

"We have been thinking about this carefully and we want to ensure that we steer clear of revenue models that fail to satisfy fans, especially if they include a low success rate. We will continue to tweak our business model where possible to offer more compelling value for the money you choose to spend with us," Kim writes.

More preferred skins now appear in lower tiers as a result, and AR category skins are evenly shared from top to bottom tiers, with the overall quality of crate skins being enhanced so that it's more "adequate" when compared to paid weapons. The quality of items in the middle tier of crates will also be improved, with the likelihood of getting them raised by 20%, although the top tier items will still be difficult to obtain, despite the probability also getting increased.

On November 20, a new Venetian Crate will be released, available to purchase with BP, and on November 27 the direct sale of this crate will be discontinued. On top of that, the likelihood of obtained locked crates through random purchase will be significantly lower from this date.

On December 18 locked crates will no longer drop from random purchases, although they can still be bought on the marketplace, and keys can only be bought if you own a locked crate.

Kim assures fans that items from future crates will continue to be able to be sold on the marketplace, while no locked crates just means one less step a player interested in those items has to go through.

Psyonix also chose to change their crate system in Rocket League earlier this year, ditching them entirely in favour of a Blueprint system.

Are people growing tired of using crates?
