Starting May 30th, Cuisine Royale will be available to play for free courtesy of Xbox One's Game Preview program. It's a fairly standard battle royale affair; the goal is to work your way through the map as it shrinks, collecting the best equipment and items while gunning opponents down until only one of you is left standing. In a silly twist, your character dons kitchenware as armour, while free loot boxes are scattered around the map in the shape of refrigerators.

As content seasons change bi-monthly, so does the theme. Players can currently get a taste of the Wild West theme, as the game features the likes of revolvers and cowboy hats to mix some country flavour into the battle.

Cuisine Royale originally started out as an April Fool's gag for Enlisted, an MMO shooter for PC. Back when it released in 2018, it was met with praise for being a fun, refreshing take on the genre which soon lead to its multi-platform release.

The game is enhanced for Xbox One X players, boasting 2560x1440 at 60fps in addition to supporting native 4K resolution at 30 fps. The final version of Cuisine Royale is expected to be released on Xbox One by the end of 2019.

REVIEW. Written by Marco Vrolijk

"What's important is that the gameplay never falls victim to its ludicrous approach."
