During this year's GDC we caught up with Mad Mimic's Luis Sampaio, who told us all about the studio's new game, Dandy Ace. It's a card-based dungeon crawler with deck building elements where, as Sampaio explained to us, "you have to create your own builds and your own play-styles based on the [card combinations]."

The game is built around mechanics whereby players use the cards they collect to improve spells or add different effects or abilities, and while there's an emphasis on fast-paced combat players still need to balance that against their overall strategy.

"We like to think it's a card-based game with way more focus on action instead of strategy," Sampaio told us in San Francisco. "The idea is to give the experience of a roguelite game, like whenever you play a new run you have these different layouts, but also keeping the quality of hand-made design."

It might be randomised but this setup means that "we are able to control the flow of the game and the pacing."

Check out the full interview below for more about the game, which is due to land in June 2020.
