Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke has confessed during a Post Mortem Session at GDC that his studio had to "murder" - as Vincke puts it - Divinity: Dragon Commander to be able to make Divinity: Original Sin, and that the RPG literally almost killed the studio.

To make the Divinity: Original Sin, Larian went independent, borrowed money from the bank, got outside investors, raised nearly a million US-dollar on Kickstarter and sacrificed Divinity: Dragon Commander. Despite all this they very nearly ran out of funding. So if Divinity: Original Sin hadn't been a serious success (which it was), that could've been the end for Larian.
