Late last night, Bethesda and Id Software unveiled the first gameplay footage of their upcoming Doom to attendees at QuakeCon. None of the footage was shown online, but some details have obviously crept out.

First of all, the game is simply titled "Doom" and not Doom 4. It runs the Id Tech 6 engine and is the first game to do so.

The demo showed lots of mechanically augmented demons, huge guns (including the iconic double barreled shotgun) and featured melee finishing moves on stunned demons in the form of a boot to the face.

There's a twist on the old familiar "find the yellow keycard" mechanic, as the player at one point rips the arm of a corpse in order to use the hand for fingerprint identification. And speaking of ripping arms of, at one point in the demo a demon rips the player's arm off and beats him to death with it. Ouch.

Head over to Polygon for more impressions from this first showing.

REVIEW. Written by Kim Orremark & Mike Holmes

"It's fast, intense, stylish, and bloody. It feels old without feeling outdated, and the pace of combat means that you'll want to play on for just a little longer."
