Doom's creators can't beat the game on Ultra-Nightmare

Introduces perma-death and brutal difficulty (and probably a lot of heartache).

The latest Doom game is nearly upon us, and it brings with it a brand new difficulty level. Called Ultra-Nightmare, the difficulty is even worse than the infamous Nightmare setting, which is well known amongst fans of the series.

If you die in this new mode, you need to restart the entire campaign from scratch: no checkpoints or level restarts. It's so tough that nobody at the id Software office has managed to beat it, the company's own Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin told IGN. As the game releases, there will probably be plenty of masochistic players willing to take on and conquer the game on this difficulty, but it will undoubtedly be a while before anybody manages it.

The game will also offer a number of secrets (as revealed in the same article) that will take players on a trip down memory lane, with each level hiding a secret that gives you access to a section of level from the original, which in turn unlocks the whole original level that's then playable from the main menu.

Doom is hoping to capture the spirit of old when it hits PC, PS4, and Xbox One in two weeks time, on May 13.

REVIEW. Written by Kim Orremark & Mike Holmes

"It's fast, intense, stylish, and bloody. It feels old without feeling outdated, and the pace of combat means that you'll want to play on for just a little longer."
