Not every publisher has to explicitly promise that there will be no pay-to-win in their games, meaning there's no way that consumer spending will affect the balance in multiplayer, but it's a different story with EA. Last year they released Star Wars Battlefront II, which was found to lean heavily on spending extra cash to progress your multiplayer character, in turn unlocking more and better abilities and weapons.

That was followed by UFC 3 just months later, where the same situation occurred once more. EA promises now, however, that this will not be the case with Battlefield V, as in a new post DICE has laid out how the game's economy will work, which will consist of two currencies: Company Coin and Battlefield Currency.

The Company Coin is gathered by playing, and can be used to change a variety of things about your company:

"As you play and progress through Battlefield 5, you will earn Company Coin. Company Coin gives you the ability to choose items outside the base progression paths to further expand and customize your Company. You can use Company Coin to unlock choices within weapon and vehicle Specializations. You can also use Company Coin to get cosmetic items, such as jackets, face paint, and weapon skins. At launch, cosmetic items will be available for soldiers and weapons. Vehicle cosmetics will be available in the first chapter of Tides of War."

Battlefield Currency can be purchased with real money, but will only allow you to buy cosmetic items for your company:

"Battlefield 5 will also have an optional currency known as Battlefield Currency, which is purchased with real-world money. Battlefield Currency can be used to acquire specific cosmetic items for your Company."

Battlefield Currency actually won't be available at launch, but will be introduced at a later date, like other elements such as the battle royale mode and the final War Story focusing on a German tank commander.

REVIEW. Written by Kim Orremark

"All the work DICE has done in renewing the core mechanics has resulted in an experience that feels tighter than it has done for many years."
