It's a sad time for the video game industry as the final work of one of the UK's most illustrious studios has been shut down, with the company itself also staring down the barrel of closure.

Fable Legends is the last game to have been developed by the Guildford-based developer, and its closure marks the end of an era, with the studio set to follow suit in the near future. The Microsoft-owned company was established back in 1996 by Peter Molyneux following his departure from Bullfrog, and was picked up by the platform holder a decade ago at which point it continued to explore the Fable universe with more numbered games, as well as offshoots including a Kinect title and the 4v1 online title, Fable Legends.

Servers for the asymmetrical free-to-play multiplayer game went offline yesterday afternoon, with a message remaining that reads: "All stories have to end eventually, but the memories of Heroic triumphs and Villainous plots will last forever. Thank you for your support - you are all Legends!"
