A big FIFA YouTuber has been charged in the UK for promoting unlawful gambling with Ultimate Team's virtual currency.

The YouTuber, Craig Douglas, goes online by the name of Nepenthez. According to BBC News he appeared at court last Friday with business partner Dylan Rigby. Both are the directors of a company called Game Gold Tradings Limited. They own the FIFA gambling sites TheFUTShop and MUTCoinTrader.

Nepenthez also owned a site called FUTGalaxy, which he promoted on his own channel without any disclosure that he owned the site himself, according to another YouTuber named HonorTheCall. As of right now, the court case involving Douglas and Rigby has been adjourned until 14 October.

Nepenthez has acknowledged that he went to court on his Twitter, but hasn't made any comment on his YouTube channel, where the bulk of his audience is.

This is reminiscent of the situation a few months back involving YouTubers Syndicate and TmarTN, who were conducting similar operations with gambling sites for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive skins, and not disclosing their ownership of their site. That saga culminated in a great many CS:GO gambling sites being forcibly taken down at the behest of Valve.

After the CS:GO debacle, the UK Gambling commission spoke about the incident;

"We are paying close attention to the growing popularity of virtual or in-game items (skins), which can be traded, sold or used as virtual currencies to gamble."

"If GB-based players are being invited to gamble with money or money's worth then this requires an operating licence."

There is no doubt that underage children were using the sites involved. What do you make of the fact that the UK Gambling Commission are finally cracking down on unlawful gambling in gaming?
