We talked to Aaron Webber, social media manager at Sega (is he the guy behind Sonic's somewhat rather rude social media feed?), about Sonic Mania which is an interesting mix of remade and brand new 2D Sonic levels created by "this amazing team of people that grew up loving Sonic, grew up playing Sonic, and are now professional coders, developers, artists, musicians".
We asked Webber whether Sonic still relevant in this form?
"Oh, 100%. And in particular I think it's games like Sonic Mania that make him so relevant for everybody. Think back to the days of Sonic versus Mario and the key factor that both games had going for them, the key thing that made them both so popular is that they were very simple to pick up and play and they were very fun and unique"
"Since the '90s there have been several attempts to revive Sonic, but even if some games have been good there's been little consistency."
