Fans of the Microsoft third-person action franchise got an unexpected triple treat at the Xbox Press Briefing with the reveal of Gears Pop, Gears Tactics and finally Gears 5, which will make the franchise transcend genres and platforms. Microsoft showed a great sense of their audience during the reveal, teasing us with the spin-offs before unveiling the fifth main series entry.

It's a massive game due out in a year (2019) that is going to be vital for Microsoft and their console efforts moving forward. In addition to delivering on the gameplay side of things it also needs to make a case for how Xbox One X can make a difference with its additional horsepower, and it looks like Gears 5 will be one of the very few shooters putting 4K60 on screen.

"Our target is always 60fps, and we believe - with everything we've done, the learning we've taken from Gears 4, and the optimisations we've been able to do beyond that - that's exactly what we're going to be doing, 60fps at 4K," The Coalition's studio head Rod Fergusson tells Wired. "The new technology of this generation has been fantastic."

This will mean both resolution and framerate will be maxed out on Microsoft's high-end console when it releases in 2019, and naturally the same is expected for a powerful-enough gaming PC. The company also presented one of the very few open-world games running at 60fps on consoles with Forza Horizon 4 at their briefing.
