During the recent What's Next event in Paris, where Focus Home Interactive showed off its latest games, Spiders CEO Jehanne Rousseau joined us to explain the studio's next RPG, Greedfall.

The game leaves sci-fi behind this time around in order to tell a story that hinges on colonisation, with players taking on the role of a European heading out to mysterious new land, hoping to settle the island and find a cure to a disease that's plaguing the folks back home. Given the subject matter, we're expecting there to be much more to it than that.

"This island is full of magic and mystery and has a very rich and new fauna and flora," Rousseau explained. "So you're here to try to find a cure and to support your cousin in his attempts to settle on this island."

Spiders has been steadily cultivating a following of fans who enjoy the way the studio explores different RPG mechanics, and that's something we discussed in Paris, particularly relating to the faction system and how your choices will affect how NPCs view you.

"As there are different factions, there is a reputation system with all these factions, there's six of them, and your interaction and all your choices in the game will change your reputation with these factions and will of course change the history itself. So, yeah, plenty of choices."

Of course, as it's a Spiders game, there's going to be a magic element, as well as alchemy and ranged combat.

"There is a hundred skills that you can use during the fights, and these skills can be really mixed," Rousseau told us. "And it's not a class game [...] so you can really decide to use magic with a little bit of alchemy, for example, because we have an alchemy system where you can mix potions that can be, for example, used as grenades or to improve your own character. We also have some firearms."

Greedfall is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One (with Pro/X support), although no release date has been set as yet. Check out the full interview below.
