Today we're so used to wireless devices using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, IR and such that it's rare to talk about things such as the length of the cable of a game controller. However, be it in order to keep the retro flavour, or, as we took note in our hands-on impressions with the NES Mini, to improve response time, the Nintendo Classic Mini comes with wired controllers, that you plug to the front of the machine, just like in the old times.

However, this brings back other issues from yesteryear: what about those with a huge TV and/or a couch too far away from it? We couldn't take accurate measures during our sessions, but all indications are that the NES Mini controller cable is around three feet long (not even one meter). Nintendo showed us the system from a coffee table between the sofa and the screen, and thus we had more than enough wire, but those who are noticing this more than likely shortage the most are the ones who want to locate the little machine next to the TV and, at the same time, not have to sit on the floor three feet from the screen. Assuming the product we checked was the final retail version, we don't believe the cable is going to magically grow longer before November 11.

Looks like the NES Mini controller cords are really short.

So, what can you do if you just don't like or can't place the device somewhere in between? Well, it turns out that there's a couple of solutions, both as simple as obvious, that will just cost around 5-10 pounds of additional costs. The first and the most recommendable in our opinion is just using a longer HDMI cable. Standard is usually around 1.8 meters, but you can find really affordable 3 or even 5 meters cables. That said, it's really nice an HDMI cable is included in the NES Mini box, for not every device includes this.

The second option, for thos who want to leave the tiny machine right next to the television - perhaps using an USB port nearby to power i t- is getting a Wii controller extension cable, for, as we explained, the NES Mini controller uses the very same connector as the Classic controllers, Nunchuks and other accessories plugged into the Wii Remote. This second option is a tad trickier as extension cables were mostly used to widen the max distance between your arms some years ago, but something's telling us that both manufacturers and retailers will be putting them back on sale really soon...

It's nice to seek the most authentic experience, but perhaps they went a bit too far by forcing people to get closer to the screen? Leave your thoughts and estimate how this is looking to you in the comments section below.

Stop the drama: longer HDMI or Nunchuk cable extension will make you happy.
