Dandara is a "directionless" metroidvania from developer Long Hat House, and we learned what that actually entails from developer João Brant when we caught up with him at PAX East.
"We started thinking about touch controls at first", says Brant. "So that's why it is so different. So we came up with this world that does not really have gravity."
The conversation covers how this makes for an experience that takes a little getting used to, as well as delving into the fiction and the main character that's inspired by a real-life Brazilian hero. In fact, the game has a lot of Brazilian flavour. "We are not from the known parts of Brazil", explains Brant. "And we take a lot of stuff from our lives. So you'll see parts from Belo Horizonte, that's our town, and it feels different, it feels unknown."
Dandara is being published by indie publisher Raw Fury Games and is set for release during the second half of the year. It's currently confirmed for PC, tablets, and Nintendo Switch, but other consoles (PS4, Xbox One) appear likely as well. Does this "different" side of Brazil grab your interest?
