Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare got an extended gameplay reveal the other night at Sony's E3 press conference, and what we saw was an impressive departure from the standard Call of Duty formula, whilst the game maintained the look and feel of the franchise (you can read more about that duality in yesterday's hands-off preview).

After taking a look at the game we had the chance to chat with Jacob Minkoff and Taylor Kurosaki, Narrative Director and Design Director at Infinity Ward, respectively, about what we can expect from the latest entry into the Call of Duty franchise.

In the past, Infinity Ward have said that Infinite Warfare is a classic story but with a futuristic setting. We asked the pair to elaborate on the meaning behind this.

"War stories are timeless." Kurosaki said. "They are fables, they are stories about people being put under incredible pressures and how they react to those pressures. We're really fans of the genre, as well as fans of CoD, going back to the first one. For us it's like a classic war story transposed to a new setting."

In the gameplay reveal, we saw combat in a new space fighter - named the Jackal - along with some segments showing off the zero-G combat that will undoubtedly occur in multiple parts of the game. "In one mission, you might be dogfighting in zero-G, in your space fighter, then you can land aboard the Retribution, and then order that ship to go to different locations."

At the start of the reveal, we saw the player take command of a huge ship, selecting the location they wanted to travel to on a map of the solar system. That ship is the aforementioned The Retribution. "You can order it to go to different missions in non-linear order." Minkoff told us. "It's really a game that has huge scope, especially because not only do you have fighting in space but you also go onto the surface of other planets throughout the solar system."

We've also been given an insight into the beginning story of the game, as well as who you'll be playing as. "Reyes (the player character) has been a leader for many years, but a squad leader. Through the events of the story, he is field promoted to captain when the captain of his ship is killed in action."

Minkoff gave a hint as to the length of the games, too; "It's pretty big, but you can expect the campaign to last in line with other previous Call of Duty games," he said. "What Infinite Warfare really has going for it is enormous scope. The fact that you're going from one planet to another, to enemy ships, launching up from the ground into dogfights - the space you will be occupying over the course of this campaign is really mind-blowing."

Of course, we couldn't have finished the interview without asking about their response to the feedback the first trailer received, which is now one of the most disliked videos on YouTube. "We're just making the best game we possibly can." Minkoff told us. "I think as we get more features out there, as they see more of the game, they are going to be really excited about it. That's our goal; to make the best game we possibly can and I think it'll speak for itself."
