There will be an international gaming tournament with support from the UK, it has today been announced.

Named 'the eGames,' the tournament is not for prize money as with most other esports tournaments, but for a medal in a similar style to that of the Olympics. A non-profit organisation has also been formed, named the International eGames Committee.

The UK minister for culture, Ed Vaizey, spoke today at the London Games Festival and said: "The eGames promises to be an exciting venture that will give esports competitors across the UK even more opportunities to showcase their talents on an international stage. I welcome the ambitions of the IEGC and their efforts to promote the UK as a leading nation in the esports sector."

The IEGC has mainly been established to help run the tournament and shape the future of esports. They also have plans to set up an International Advisory Board to assist in running the eGames and maintaining ethical standards.

Each country will be able to create their own eTeam, and the UK, Canada, Brazil, and the USA are already on board and have their own. The first eGames event will be a two-day pop up in Rio during the Olympics to attract partners and introduce the world of competitive gaming.

The chief marketing officer for the International eGames group, Chester King, said: "We plan to take the very best practice from the sports world and bring it to competitive gaming. Our ambition is to bring credibly to the sector, dignity to the players and inspiration to the spectators."

This is incredibly exciting news for esports, and we look forward to what is to come from this initiative.
