Sony's CEO Kaz Hirai has been at the company for quite some time now, formerly being a part of the PlayStation side of things before replacing Howard Stringer as Sony Corp's CEO in April 2012, and now Variety has reported that Hirai is stepping down from his role, with chief financial officer Kenichiro Yoshida taking over his role.

"As the company approaches a crucial juncture, when we will embark on a new mid-range plan, I consider this to be the ideal time to pass the baton of leadership to new management, for the future of Sony and also for myself to embark on a new chapter in my life," Hirai said in a statement.

Sources claim part of the reason for the decision is the hectic travel schedule that comes from the role, and Hirai wants to spend more time with his family instead. The same sources also say that he intends to remain involved with Sony through his new chairman role, so it won't be like we'll never see him in the lands of Sony again.

Do you think the last few years for Sony under Hirai have been good?
