UEFA (the Union of European Football Associations) has announced on their website that developer Konami has ended their partnership with UEFA that gave them the rights to the Champions League in their game Pro Evolution Soccer, meaning that after the final in Kiev next month, the ten-year partnership will conclude.

UEFA's marketing director of Events, Guy-Laurent Epstein, describes it as "a very cooperative and mutually beneficial partnership. UEFA would like to thank Konami for its tremendous commitment and support to UEFA club competitions for the last decade and we look forward to continuing to work with Konami in the sphere of UEFA national team football."

"We will shift our focus into other areas", said Jonas Lygaard, senior director of brand & business development for Konami Digital Entertainment B.V. "We will continue to explore alternative ways UEFA and Konami can continue to work together, as our relationship remains strong."

This obviously raises the question as to the future of the Champions League license, so we may well see FIFA invest in that moving forward. Do you think that's likely?

"This year's PES is brilliant on the ball, but there's still some work to be done behind the scenes."
