Not surprisingly, Nintendo announced at the end of August that, after the weird but successful Mercedes-Benz collaboration, Mario Kart 8 for Wii U would become the first entry of the series with paid DLC. In other words, and what most players keep requesting since Gamecube days, the brilliant racing craziness is at last getting new tracks, drivers and vehicles.

Also for the first time, in what could be pretty much called "Nintendo Kart", new content comes partly from different universes than Mushroom Kingdom. For example, players will be able to drive as Link, on the Blue Falcon ship from F-Zero, and through the retro tracks of ExciteBike.

First DLC pack is The Legend of Zelda's and launches next month, it requires at least 1 GB of free space and includes Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach and Link as characters, Blue Falcon, B Dasher, Master Cycle and a secret item as vehicles, and finally two new cups: Triforce and Yoshi's Egg.

That's 8 new courses in total, to add to game's current 32 circuit selection. So players will be able to compete locally and online on 40 tracks until the second pack arrives in May:

Animal Crossing DLC requires another 1 GB of free disk space, adds Villager, Isabelle and Dry Bowser as drivers, 4 TBA vehicles and two new cups: Super Leaf and Super Bell.

Both packs cost £7 separately or £11 if you're getting both, which adds an additional eight colours for Yoshis and Shy Guys as a bonus.

Nintendo has shared two artworks representing Link on his new motorcycle in Skyward Sword artstyle and both Isabelle and Villager on their cars in New Leaf artstyle.

Additionally, you can check out the classic B Dasher from Mario Kart DS in action in Mario Kart 8 (along with details on these DLC packs) in the trailer below the pictures:
