Mercy is without a doubt one of, if not the most, popular support characters in Overwatch, and one of the main reasons for this is her Ultimate, Resurrect, which can revive all teammates within a fairly large area. That's why we think today's announcement might be a controversial one.

Blizzard has released a new developer update where the game's director, Jeff Kaplan, reveals that they're changing Mercy in some very significant ways. First of all, Resurrect won't be her Ultimate any more, as it'll become a regular ability that has a thirty second cooldown and will only revive a single character.

Replacing Resurrect as her Ultimate is something called Valkyrie. This will let her fly freely around the map, while also enhancing all of her abilities. This means that her healing beam will become stronger and can heal several people at once, Resurrect will get a shorter cooldown, Guardian Angel will get a longer range, her blasters will deal more damage, and more. Valkyrie will last for twenty seconds, so it definitely sounds effective when timed well.

Kaplan specifies that the team might tweak some of the changes as they get feedback from the test servers, so expect a few experimental changes during the test. He also states that their reasoning for the changes is that they saw players just waiting for "the perfect moment" when having Resurrect charged up, and that it kinda ruined the impact of the enemies' devastating attack when she could pretty much nullify it by resurrecting her entire team.

Do you agree with the reasoning behind the changes, and do you like the sound of the new Mercy?
