Perfectly on time to celebrate the Metroid series' 30th anniversary, the fan project AM2R: Return of Samus reached version 1.00 and was released the day before yesterday, Saturday August 6th. The fan project, well known amongst the Metroid fan community, is an unofficial remake for PC of the second game of the series, Metroid 2: Return of Samus, which was launched for the original Game Boy in the early 90s.

The fan tribute sports newly drawn sprites, new soundtrack and even new areas to explore but, alas, as usual with this kind of non-licensed uses of a trademarked franchise, Nintendo has already sent out Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notices to sites hosting the file.

This is absolutely normal and common practise, but the move is being particularly criticised by users this time, as Nintendo was fast to act against the fan project, but at the same time slow or completely absent when it came to celebrating the anniversary themselves. No action, no mention on social media, no public celebration of the beloved franchise. And this follows on years of Samus missing from action, and with the 3DS multiplayer spin-off Metroid Prime: Federation Force as the only official nod to the franchise on the horizon. Perhaps proper official celebrations and more announcements will come when that game launches and NX is officially unveiled next month?
