They say that sometimes even bad publicity is good publicity, and that may have a kernel of truth as far as Middle-earth: Shadow of War is concerned because, despite a bit of backlash against the inclusion of paid-for loot boxes in the single-player game, Monolith's open-world fantasy adventure has still managed to shift nearly 400,000 copies on Steam.

This solid showing on the PC platform comes alongside a second-place debut in the UK's latest retail charts from GfK (the only thing that kept it off top spot was a certain game called FIFA 18), which overall contributes to seemingly healthy sales around launch. Whether that'll be enough to prompt a third entry in the series remains to be seen.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is an open-world adventure game set in Tolkien's fantasy universe that expands on the Nemesis system that defined the original game, and you can read our review here.
