Naomi Watts to star in Game of Thrones prequel series

HBO are working hard at the upcoming George R.R. Martin and Jane Goldman's (Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service) untitled Game of Thrones prequel series and last night we found out that Naomi Watts (King Kong, Mulholland Drive, Birdman) will play the leading role. There aren't a lot of details on Watts' character, but according to Variety, she plays "a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret". HBO has teased the prequel series with the following lines:

"Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend... it's not the story we think we know."

Variety writes:

"Taking place thousands of years before the events of "Game of Thrones," Goldman's project chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend-it's not the story we think we know."
