A few days ago Ghost Games and Electronic Arts unveiled Need for Speed Heat, which is the latest game in a long-running series of driving games. Heat will be released on November 8th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

It is EA we are talking about, the same company that caused a worldwide outrage about loot boxes in 2017's Star Wars Battlefront II. So what about Need for Speed Heat and loot boxes? Turns out, there are none this time around.

Recently EA held a Q&A session in Reddit, and in it, EA's community manager Ben Walke confirmed, that there will be no loot boxes in Heat.

"We plan to have post launch paid-DLC in the form of car packs. Later this year, we'll introduce a time-save pack, that will show all collectables on the map. Honestly, that's it. [...] There are no loot boxes in NFS Heat and there won't be."

You might also remember that Need for Speed Payback's progression system was tied to a card system, which was a prime target for loot boxes and microtransactions. This is now gone in Heat as well.

"Customisation options are earned through the completion of in-game events. For example, you spot a street race on your map and notice it has a new performance part up for grabs. Win the race, win the part. Speed cards from NFS Payback are gone."

So by the looks of it, EA has learned its lesson: being too greedy is not a good thing.
