After setting an internal record for the publisher by becoming Devolver Digital's biggest ever launch following the game's release on Steam's Early Access on August 29, Scum was soon the subject of controversy as players found that they had the ability to customise their characters by giving them neo-Nazi tattoos.

The controversy was raised on Reddit where some users realised that in the DLC Supporter Pack there were tattoos that focused on the numbers 14 and 88, which are clear references to neo-Nazism, in addition to other suspect symbols, like the iron cross and a skull. Given the reaction, Devolver and Gamepires decided to remove them immediately, apologising to the community in the process.

However, there are those who defended the choice, arguing that their presence was dictated by the setting of the game since players follow criminals and it's not uncommon that those kinds of tattoos are inked in prison.

Despite there being an element of realism, however, the move doesn't seem to have been welcomed by the wider community. Fortunately, the publisher and studio have resolved the situation by apologising with a press release, explaining that such tattoos were present only for greater realism, and have promised to check all the content in the game so that there's nothing else that might offend.

What do you think of this situation? Do you think it was right to remove them or was it right to keep them to make the gaming experience more realistic?

Scum

Thanks, GameRevolution.
