Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is the upcoming game from Patrice Désilets and his new Montreal-based studio, Panache Digital Games, and in Désilets' own words it's a "single-player open-world exploration-survival game" set in Africa starting ten million years ago.

The game, which we saw tonight on stage during The Game Awards, will have players taking control of the last common ancestor of the ape family, through to Lucy ("the famous Australopithecus"). We got to see gameplay on stage during the awards evening, and as the years roll by we see a number of apes encounter a range of deadly-looking scenarios including fearsome looking predators and dangerous traversal.

The gameplay on display was apparently filmed just last week, and the title is set to land at some point in 2019, so expect to see more of it the weeks and months ahead.
