Ahh, it's been four years since this very remake was announced at Sony's press conference in 2015. An ambitious project, Square Enix committed to rebuilding the game from the ground up for the current generation of consoles. With such a task ahead of them, the publisher decided to make the game an episodic release, with the first instalment currently slated for March 3, 2020.
This year, we finally get to see some real-time gameplay. Following a CG intro showing a train-crash scene, we see Cloud enter combat. This time around the player can choose which combat style they prefer to use. A "lock-on" combat system more closely aligned with the original is available for a more tactical approach, alongside real-time fighting mechanics for those looking for a more action-oriented take. Abilities can be mapped to button prompts in this action mode, allowing for fast use of character moves. The demo culminated in a huge boss fight showing multiple characters firing off together using different styles.
During the presentation, Square Enix also revealed that the full game will feature "two Blu-ray discs of content" showing off the sheer scope of the remake. Tetsuya Nomura expressed his gratitude towards player patience and the fan reception regarding the announcement of the remake when he was brought on stage to discuss his role on the project.
Nomura also brought along an extended version of yesterday's release date reveal trailer, which closed out its appearance at the Square Enix E3 press conference. This extended cut showed Cloud interacting with some more fan favourite characters, and we'll add that and anything else we can find in due course.
