Nintendo's latest Japanese Direct has seen the company announce a new 3DS model, complete with a second 'C-Stick' style analog pad.

The model will come in two sizes - normal and LL - and both will carry a small secondary analog stick positioned just above the right-hand side face buttons. There's also two additional shoulder buttons built into the rear of the handheld, which sit just to the side of the current shoulder buttons.

The regular-sized new 3DS is actually slightly bigger (if thinner) than its predecessor: it measures 80.6mm x 142mm x 21.6mm, compared to the previous 74mm x 134mm x 21mm. It's also slightly heavier - 253g versus 235g. The face buttons are now emblazoned with colours that echo the company's SNES pad. The power button and the stylus have now been moved to the bottom rim of the handheld, stacked alongside the headphone jack.

The new models have a bigger CPU to allow for faster browsing and downloading from the dedicated eShop, while the top screen's 3D effect is reportedly better than the previous model, and is viewable from every angle (an issue with the current models, that require exact positioning to get the effect). You'll be able to customise the handheld's faceplates, and the console will carry in-built NFC in preparation for Nintendo's Amibo figurine rollout.

The new versions are due in Japan on October 11th. The New Nintendo 3DS is priced at 16,000 yen ($154) and the New Nintendo 3DS LL is priced at 18,800 yen ($181).

Nintendo's Portugal division has confirmed the console will come to Europe in 2015, but there's no specific date or quarter yet.
