Long before Pokémon Go blew up and got everything out and about in an effort to catch 'em all, Niantic Labs had another game out there that was built on the same framework and that married location-based gameplay with AR and social multiplayer. Ingress, originally released in November 2012, six years ago, and today, the new version, a reboot if you will, is available for download on Android (Google Play) and iOS devices (App Store).

While the basic gameplay is unchanged, The Enlightened and The Resistance (green and blue) fight for control of portal and XM (exotic matter). Each team is headed by an AI leader and one new feature is that players will be able to interact with them and they will change accordingly. The narrative is rebooted and as what the case with Ingress will adapt to reflect what side is "winning". There's also an anime series coming to Netflix, The Ingress Anime, which is launching next year. There is also a live-action series, The Dunraven Project (replaces the Ingress Report) that will expand the narrative.

A lot of effort has been made to make the game more accessible for new players, and returning players will now be able to "prestige" the game at level 16 and start over. Naturally the interface is very different, and the game is now fully 3D. An interesting move is that the portal combat does not make use of AR as that was found only to be a hindrance, instead there will be AR features for the planning phase.
