In this interview, game designer from Beautifun Games Kevin Cerdà explains Nihilumbra's success on iOS and details its imminent launch on Wii U after the Steam version. Additionally he shares some clues on Megamagic, the new PC game from the Spanish studio.

"We wanted to make a difference and do something a little bit darker than what you usually find on the Apple Store. And also harder". And that's the key to the game success according to Cerdà. On a deeper description, Nihilumbra is "a philosophic game about solving puzzles, painting with colors, changing the physics of the world using different colors... but it also explains a story about a character who is nothing at all (...) and tries to escape his inevitable fate of being absorbed again by the void".

Regarding those colour mechanics, you use your finger or mouse on "a platformer where the levels are not finished when you arrive - you have to finish them". For example, blue painting makes the environment slippery, green is bouncy, brown is sticky, red is hot, yellow is conductor of electricity, and so on.

Soon enough, players will be able to paint on their GamePads. Regarding the new version, "Wii U is like the most natural platform, it's even better than the platform it was designed for originally", explains the game designer based on the touch screen and buttons combination. "It has all the technical improvements we did for the PC version, it has the touch interface from iOS; it's the most complete version", and it has a co-op multiplayer version (one plays, the other paints).

But this latest version has suffered from some delays: "Wii U version is finished, but there's just one bug [to fix] (...) problem is we need an update of the engine we're using. The only thing we can do is waiting". Finally, porting Nihilumbra to PS Vita is "really logical" as well, but "right now it's not in our plans" due to manpower, though "Sony seems to like the game".

On a second meaning, Nihilimbra is actually the story of this indie studio itself. Watch the full interview for more on that, success on Steam vs iOS ("we were really fresh on iOS") and Megamagic, studio's new project for PC which main mechanic is, indeed, "a mixture between Command & Conquer, Streets of Rage, the classic Zeldas and Pokémon"... but currently too early to show.
