Nintendo: "NX is something very new I'd like to play"

It's not the first time that Nintendo has underlined that its new and mysterious NX console will be something a bit different, an alternative to both Wii U and 3DS, and not strictly speaking a successor to either. However, it's interesting to see how the company is leaning more and more to the way they teased the Wii before its unveiling, back when it was codenamed Nintendo Revolution and not even its innovative controller had been revealed.

Aside from the obvious difference of them being a decade apart, and considering that Nintendo isn't yet inviting everyone to try the new console (at E3 this year the company is only showing The Legend of Zelda Wii U), the latest statements from president Tatsumi Kimishima will sound a little familiar to those who have been following the company in recent years:

"It's something very new. The hardware, the software lineup, all of it is something I'd like to play for the first time myself. (...) the NX is neither the successor to the Wii U nor to the 3DS. It's a new way of playing games, which I think will have a larger impact that the Wii U, but I don't feel it's a pure replacement for the Wii U.

"When people finish the launch titles, they will want things to buy in spring, on summer break, at Christmas. As such, it's not simply a question of when the hardware's ready; rather, we need to ensure our software lineup is also in a good place."

This latest statement from the Nintendo chief can be found on Aashi Shimbun (via Perfectly Nintendo), and in the same interview Kimishima outlined Nintendo's plans to get involved in the movie making business in the coming years.

Additionally, Kimishima doesn't believe that the global launch of NX in March 2017 will have a negative impact on the Nintendo 3DS, largely because the handheld is getting Pokémon Sun/Moon in November of this year. Nintendo's president also reiterated that they're looking for a balance between hardware power and competitive pricing at retail, as the company won't be selling NX at a loss.
