Nintendo has revealed that Miiverse, the social network built to support the Wii U when it launches later this year, will not support or connect to sites Facebook and Twitter.

Nintendo confirmed their decision to go it alone to GI International. While Miiverse wont talk to other sites like Facebook, the company are confident that they can still maintain a vibrant online community.

Laurent Fischer from Nintendo of Europe said: "The community will be the Wii U owners, who will have this common interest for video games and our expectation about that is it's going to be a way to enhance the idea of sharing information on the video game."

Nintendo are planning on making Miiverse accessible on a variety of different devices. "From any devices in the future you will be able to access the Miiverse, from mobile phone or laptop," said Fischer. "You can check what's going on and even participate."

Nintendo are arguing the case that with Facebook and Twitter available on so many other devices, there isn't much need for them to jump on the bandwagon, allowing them to focus on their own ideas instead.

"On the Wii U we do have additional reasons for connecting, we talked about things like the video chat system, nothing revolutionary but it's going to be convenient, it's going to be easy."

With all of the other major platforms pushing for increased connectivity, it certainly is a bold move for Nintendo to go their own way. Whether it proves to be the right choice remains to be seen.
