What sales numbers have revealed over the past few years is that the digital portion of the revenue earned by every major release has steadily increased, slowly but surely overtaking the physical sales, however, many still estimate that physical sales aren't going anywhere, something that investment bank and asset management firm Piper Jaffray disagrees with.
In a new report written by Michael J. Olson and Yung Kim, they estimate that game revenue will be 100% digital by 2022, saying:
"We believe it is a certainty that video games will be ~100% digital in the coming years, and while exact timing is hard to pinpoint, we think 2022 is a realistic expectation."
Furthermore, the report describes this trend as being positive for publishers, saying that margins would be "dramatically higher" as a result of revenues going digital, and removing the physical production and distribution.
Would you like a world where sales are 100% digital?
