According to sources close to Gamereactor, Pokémon Go's global launch was set to take place on July 7, after a soft launch which started the day before. The game was available in a few regions and was expected to land on both Android and iOS in many more markets within the next few hours, but that didn't happen.

Android users quickly opted for downloading and installing the APK version of the game (be careful with that, always download verified and safe files), whereas iPhone users were pretty much left waiting (besides AU, NZ and US), and if they search for "Pokémon Go" in the App Store today, they will still only find unofficial clones or imitation apps (how those get approved by Apple is another story altogether).

It is true that the buzz caused by the Android launch, and the consequent issues caused by stress put on the servers, could've been enough reason to hold back the global launch and wait until everything's working properly. This was later confirmed at the weekend by Niantic CEO John Hanke to Business Insider. Apparently the studio "is aware of the problem and hard at work on a fix" and thus the international rollout (including European markets such as the UK, Spain and Germany) has been "paused until we're comfortable".

It's all now pretty much a matter of server availability and bug fixes, the former being expanded after, according to Hanke. "We thought the game would be popular, but it obviously struck a nerve," he said.

Gamereactor has checked with The Pokémon Company on the estimated time of arrival of both Android and iPhone versions of Pokémon Go and will update this piece if/when the official answer comes back to us.

"It isn't without its flaws, but what's there is engaging, innovative, and most importantly, fun."
