The latest generation of Pokémon games on Nintendo's handheld family will be the last, Game Freak's director Shigeru Ohmori unveiled recently during an Interview with IGN, where he states that his team originally thought they reached the end of the line in 2013 with Pokémon X/Y but ended up "completely redesigning" the game code for last year's Pokémon titles. This is what was ultimately the reason behind the obvious frame-rate drops players noticed on older Nintendo 3DS models.

"With Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, we've tried to eke that out more and really, really push the system to its absolute limits," Ohmori explained during the interview. "We're now feeling that perhaps this is the maximum of what we can get out."

"So we're really treating Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the culmination of our work with the 3DS system."

In the same conversation he also talked about the Nintendo Switch as well, but didn't comment on rumours of a possible Pokémon Switch instalment. What further plans the studio has is yet to be unveiled.

If you want to know more details about what to expect from Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, take a look at the new story trailer that Nintendo released yesterday. Here you'll see the highly improved narrative and some well-known foes among the Solgaleo and Lunala.

Are you sad that this will be the last outing on the 3DS?
