After Sony yesterday in an official statement asked Gran Turismo 5 players to take their experience offline in the hope of reducing the "traffic congestion" that was clogging servers, developer Polyphony has weighed in on a possible fix.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed an update is due tomorrow, but due to the way the game has been built to intergrate online and offline components, the developer is still uncertain of the results. "We're trying to gauge what will happen, but we don't know at this point in time."
"Yesterday the online service was kind of in a critical state," the CEO explained. "The data centre was set up to handle 500,000 connections but the number of connections we received greatly exceeded that amount and there was a high chance of experiencing problems as a result.
The design of the GT game really integrates the online and offline parts. So the problems online actually affected the offline play as well. Right now we've changed the number of simultaneous connections that are possible to one million, doubling the number."
Yamauchi also told the site that continuous online updates were expected, with the developer updating the title "every week, every month".
It's not the first time that a high-profile title has been hit with first day online issues due to high traffic numbers, but that's unlikely to ease petrol-heads up and down the country who want to play the game they've waited five years for.
