Originally designed as an Xbox Live Arcade game, but starting its life on PC as an early access release Hawken had gathered a strong following, but ran into development issues after its previous publisher, Meteor Entertainment, closed its doors in March 2014.

The game was picked up by Reloaded Games in 2015 and they have recently announced that the title will be release as free-to-play on Xbox One and PS4 in July.

We spoke to Joshua Clausen about Hawken's free to play model and the concern over pay to win mechanics to which he said "Well, nothing is right out, but definitely free to play is going to be a core to everything, we're going to try to keep it to the point where it's certainly not a pay to win scenario, everything is earnable, cosmetics tend to be the things you pay for and you can put money into it to progress a bit faster".

It seems like Reloaded Games are open to all options when it comes to content with Clausen adding "There is some possibility of some DLC type packs or additional pure content or a map type thing of potential that you could pay for up front".

With a lack of free to play games being seen on console we asked if Clausen thought Hawken had enough content to compete with full price titles, to which he said "I believe that Hawken has the kind of legs and the skeleton to be able to be long term, really a core game in people's collection of things that they play all the time and definitely with the kind of content road map that we are seeing it's probably how it's going to pan out, it's going to be a really solid play experience".

Hawken will release for PS4 and Xbox One, free-to-play on July 1st. When asked if he thought the game would succeed as a console release Clausen had this to add;

"There's really a lot of people that want to see this thing succeed and we're making sure we're pretty deliberate and not making too fast of a move too soon."
