There had been whispers of a Mortal Kombat remaster, which was going to bring the glory days back for modern gamers to enjoy, but nothing concrete had emerged about the project. Until now.

It turns out that Warner Bros. had commissioned a remaster of the first three games in the series, under the catchy names Mortal Kombat Remastered and Mortal Kombat Kollection Online (it seems that they never settled on one). However, according to Danny Huynh, who claims to have been the concept and UI artist on the project, the remaster has been cancelled.

A report over on DSOGaming links to a since-removed page (don't worry, there's a cached version of it here) containing UI designs for the remastered kollection. The work was being done by Blind Squirrel Games (which previously worked on Borderlands Enhanced and the BioShock Collection).

The now-removed page also mentions "Krypt mode", which is said to have been a new "way to play the original trilogy." Apparently, Huynh was tasked with creating "a look of how players would interact and move throughout the game mode."

It doesn't look like this remastered trilogy will ever see the light of day. On the other hand, Mortal Kombat 11 is due to land on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One on April 23.
